In a display of one-upmanship, the enfants terribles that make up thingNY are writing concertos for and against one another. What is a concerto? Is it something you can feel? Something you can touch? Or is it something greater than ourselves? Something almost unknowable? Answers to these questions and more when we present the following new works:
Jeffrey Young – Concertino [world premiere]
Paul Pinto – Concerto for Sax [world premiere]
Erin Rogers – Chronolinea [world premiere]
Andrea La Rose – Concerto for Anybody
Isabel Castellvi – Concerto for Everybody [world premiere]
Then at 8pm, the original New York punk classicists, Anti-Social Music, take the stage for some avant-garde debauchery by Hess, La Rose, Lasaga, Muchmore and Sankaram.
It’s a new music cage match! Hoo-wah.
chashama 217 e 42nd st. manhattan (take the 4,5,6,7 or S trains to 42nd st-grand central)a big fat concert with singers, dancers, painters and loads of big fat music by paul pinto, joseph hallman and jonah bloch-johnson. and of course, gloriously chubby improv of the non-pop persuasion. our fine cellist, isabel castellvi’s group, the ai ensemble, will do a set at 7:30, too! $10

Finally, saxophone in the symphony!
The Astoria Symphony opens its 6th season with a remarkable program. Miranda Cuckson performs Alban Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, one of the few orchestral pieces to feature saxophone as part of the symphonic palette. We will also hear the world premiere of Steve Horowitz’s Mix/Remix. In honor of Hispanic heritage month, we also feature a Latin American Folk Song Suite, a newly commissioned work by the young Puerto Rican composer Angelica Negron, and Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas’ bombastic tour de force La Noche de los Mayas, featuring the Queens College Percussion Ensemble, directed by the Aaron Copland School of Music Professor of Percussion, Michael Lipsey.
