Rage Thormbones + Popebama

Date: November 29, 2017
Time: 8:00 pm

Two duos with unnecessarily nonsensical names play some weird and hard music for y’all. The amount of gear for this set is reason alone to come by. Also, we’re doing my piece Wormhole which is a deep adventure in hopping between electronic and acoustic universes with a ton of small instrumental baggage. I’m really proud of this set and this group, so don’t miss this!

about:
Following St. Peter’s veneration in 33, Popebama formed 2000 years later in a swarm of warm honey and wooden harmonicas, collecting sounds of years past and forging textures of tomorrow. Erin Rogers (saxophones), and Dennis Sullivan (percussion), NYC-based composer-performers, apply text, electronics, and high-energy instrumental writing, to communicate to worlds beyond measly Earth (though we love Earth and the rich soil). Specializing in works conceived by Rogers, Sullivan, and composers such as Paul Pinto, Matthew Shlomowitz and Eric Wubbels, with upcoming works by Jenna Lyle, Daniel Silliman, and Andrew Greenwald, the duo has performed on the Permutations, Home Audio, Avant Garasement and Sound Traffic Concert Series, with featured appearances at the Edmonton Fringe Festival (Canada), Diabolical Records (Salt Lake City), and the Inaugural VU Symposium (Park City, UT), most recently performing for an ecstatic crowd at the 2017 New Music Gathering (Bowling Green, OH). Popebama will be featured at the inaugural SPLICE Festival at the University of Western Michigan.

RAGE THORMBONES is a collaboration between trombonists Matt Barbier and Weston Olencki. RAGE has recorded for HatHut and Populist Records, fulfilled residencies at Harvard, Stanford, NYU, and has plans to finally release some albums soon. Weston lives and works in New York and Matt in Los Angeles. They are best friends.
