Hi/r/stories

Hi/r/stories is about directly engaging with history. If ePhemera and REPlayboth explore alternatives to specific narratives in “classical” music, Hi/r/storiesis centered around narrative itself. What stories get told in the canonical history? How can music articulate an alternative hi/r/story? And in our digital culture of sharing and re-sharing and adding commentary, how has the process of writing, re-writing, and understanding history changed?

GILLIAN CHADSEY & IVAN TALIJANCIC/WAXFACTORY
SPELL FOR FAINTING#2

A structured improvisational piece for a performer and a DJ using disparate textual sources, 25 musical selections and sounds, and over 50 objects as an investigation in the chaos of creation. Phase 1: Objects – curious ephemera or emblems of a lingering encounter?

EVAN JOHNSON AND CHIP RODGERS
SOUL TRAVEL WORKSHOP

Evan and Chip are attempting to resurrect their past lives. The two best friends document their findings as they visit psychics, meditate, hold séances, undergo hypnotherapy and psychoanalysis, and learn just as much about their own messed-up relationship as the ones they might have had.

THINGNY
WHISPER PIECE

Experimental music collective thingNY’s new set of operatic scenes opens with a soundscape of sirens, speech and singing, experienced from different perspectives depending on your seat and your time in the space. The scene depicts stories and philosophies from a community about to be ravaged by an approaching storm.

BOOM BAT GESTURE PERFORMANCE GROUP
ZOOM THOUSAND TIME

In Zoom Thousand Time, BOOM BAT GESTURE applies the visual concept of an infinite zoom to time-based performance. Using a live 10 minute improvisation as source, BBG will zoom into/strech out one minute of each previous piece for all ensuing presentations, reducing the source material by 90% each time, culminating in a final performance using only the material that occurred in 3/5 of a second of the original source. Using this hyper-minimalist, ever-shrinking palette, they will navigate forms, existing and invented, in an effort to find freedom and expression under intense limitations.

New Thread @ NYsoundCircuit 4.3 – Dimenna Center

NYsoundCircuit 4.3
“1, 2, 3″

Saturday, May 11, 2013, 8 PM, The DiMenna Center, NYC

NYsoundCircuit – the multimedia salon series – closes the season with one of its most varied sonic and visual explorations yet. Featured is the one and only turntablist MARIA CHAVEZ, making it as easy as “1,2,3” with a solo, duo, and finally a trio set woven through the evening with Sandy Ewen and Daniel Neumann. Also lined up are ANGÉLICA NEGRÓN premiering a new set of songs for voice, clocks, accordions, toys, and electronics and violinist ANDIE SPRINGER performing “Dandelion” by MARY KOUYOUMDJIAN, exploring childhood manipulations of old home movies. Trumpeter HUGO MORENO performs “Toying” by Chelsea Music Festival Composer-in-Residence ERIC NATHAN. Saxophones wail as the NEW THREAD QUARTET delivers music from the lyrical to the virtuosic. DANIEL NEUMANN performs a multi-channel live improvisation, “A Corner as a Field” while the CURT SYDNOR QUARTET reimagines the architecture of Louis Sullivan in “Materials and their Destiny.”

Join us once again at NYsoundCircuit!

GLUE – a structured improvisation modeled on the Fluxus piece For a Drummer (Fluxversion 1) by George Brecht which asks that a “performer drums with drumsticks or drum brushes over the surface of wet mud or thick glue until brushes or sticks get stuck and can’t be lifted.” The accompanying ensemble members are each equipped with their primary instrument and an electronic instrument capable of “getting stuck” on its own.
