Popebama presents: Works by Popebama & Rick Burkhardt

Saturday, December 11, 8pm (in-person)
South Oxford Space – 138 South Oxford St, Brooklyn
Tickets online/at-the-door ($10-$20 sliding scale)
Noisy, multi-instrumental, text-laden, Popebama applies the freshness of experimental sound and free spirit of improvisation to precise execution and formal composition. Since 2016, Erin Rogers and Dennis Sullivan have pooled their collective experience as composer-performer-improvisers to uncover new ground in both sound and performance. Joined by composer-performer-playwright Rick Burkhardt on accordion, the program will begin with an improvising trio, followed by a new work for multiphonics + percussion/electronics by Rogers. The event will culminate in the premiere of Wing, a ~30 minute journey of 2 playing/speaking instrumentalists, recounting visual details from a long-ago scene complete with imaginative excursions and daydream-y escapades; the fusion of instruments, sound, and text becoming a singular thought, in the seamless way Burkhardt has become known for.

A Piano Lives In Brooklyn! Kathy Supové premieres Constancy

Arete presents: A Piano Lives In Brooklyn!

When: December 23rd, 2021, 6:00-8:00pm
Where: Mise-En Place
341 Calyer St, Brooklyn, NY 11222
Subway: G train to Nassau
Bus: B24
Cost: Free admission, donations accepted
The pianist Kathleen Supove excavates the surrounding land, mining not for silver (as in Leadville Pantoum), but for musical and literary inspiration. She has found it, and just in time for the reawakening of Brooklyn to live music and live poetry!! A concert of beautiful words and music by Brooklynites, including several premiere performances. Works by Angélica Negrón, Guy Barash, Erin Rogers, Randall Woolf and Kathleen Supové. Poetry by Megan Duffy, Randall Woolf and Nick Flynn. This concert is kid friendly (age 6 and up), and a little bit of a holiday party as well, featuring gifts such as homemade soaps, which are a hobby of Ms Supove’s. There will be a post concert Q & A with the artists.

“What Ms. Supové is really exploding is the piano recital as we have known it, a mission more radical and arguably more needed.”

– Anthony Tommasini, NY Times
“This was classical music played like the best rock’n’roll. It was passionate, earnest, loud and more complex than the gatekeepers of high culture would like to think. Brava.”

– Ben Sisario, NY Press
In May, 2012, Kathleen Supové received the ASCAP John Cage Award for “the artistry and passion with which she performs, commissions, records, and champions the music of our time.”

Kathleen Supové is one of America’s most acclaimed and versatile contemporary music pianists, known for continually redefining what it means to be a pianist/keyboardist/performance artist in today’s world. In addition to her compelling virtuosity, she is also known for her inventive ways of breaking down the wall between performer and audience.

A Piano Lives In Brooklyn! is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council.
Co-presented by Melinda Faylor and Areté Presents.
