thingNY in Calgary – Bug Incision!

Date: April 24, 2014
Time: 8:30 pm

Bug Incision presents thingNY in Calgary, Alberta:

This Takes Place Close By is a new theatrical work-in-progress from New York experimental music collective, thingNY. Developed and performed by thingNY’s composer-performers, Gelsey Bell, Andrew Livingston, Paul Pinto, Erin Rogers, Dave Ruder and Jeffrey Young, This Takes Place Close By is a set of operatic meditations on the difficulty of talking about natural disasters from a geographical and temporal distance. In this concert version, the work explores the eerie and the absurd through instrumental and sonic soundscapes, song and whispered speech, disjointed sentences and linguistic play, and offers a look at the mediating technologies that enable us to spectate as other parts of the world are destroyed, as well as a critical perspective on how those technologies shape and separate us. Scenes revolve around the themes of darkness, quietness, and loneliness, exploring the private terrors of those trapped in wreckage, the confusion of loved ones and spectators, and the cynicism of those who see the destruction as romantic desolation. The piece will be developed over the next year, leading to a theatrical run in New York in 2015. This is thingNY’s first time performing in Canada.

thingNY 2014 Season Party – Standard Toykraft, Brooklyn

Date: April 5, 2014
Time: 6:00 pm

Saturday, April 5th! from 6:00 to 10:00pm, my five esteemed colleagues of thingNY and I will be throwing a party at Standard ToyKraft (722 Metropolitan Ave, L train to Graham). We’ll have your standard party fare – all you can eat grits, booze a-plenty, digital and physical games designed just for the occasion, and best of all, performances:

– Mike Doughty (formerly of Soul Coughing), featuring thingNY’s own Andrew “Scrap” Livingston on cello
– Dave Malloy (creator and star of off-Broadway sensation “Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812”, which featured thingNY’s Gelsey & Paul)
– Levy Lorenzo (inventor of the Air Marimba and percussionist extraordinaire)
– and of course thingNY, performing excerpts of what we’re spending all our time on!

The party also functions as a benefit for our 2014 activities. We got a grant from the NYC DCA, and we’ve almost matched it! We need one final push to get us over the edge so we can keep their funding: IndieGoGo campaign

Admission for the event this weekend is on a sliding scale, starting as low as $10. We’ll also have game & auction tickets available at the door.

Our auctioned items include:
– on-site profesh recording services at a place of your choosing
– wedding cake
– a year’s membership to Issue Project Room
– free admission to 2 events at Roulette
– cab rides from thingNY members
– swag from a variety of labels, gear companies, and the like and MUCH MORE

This party is part of our week-long residency at STK. We’ve been working all day & night on a big new piece that we’ll take to Canada at the end of the month and then bring back to the States later this year.

For more info or to RSVP, go here. If you can’t make it but are still interested in supporting us in these future ventures, please check out our IndieGoGo campaign. (Also great prizes!)
